On addition No. 10 'Rhys' was on display having been reassembled following work, although the loco is not quite ready to steam again yet. the major feature of the gala was the use of station pilots - Blackbird at Amersham and No. 11 at Woodrow. The latter also handles all the empty stock moves. The only problem of the day was caused by poor lighters, which meant that Blackbird had to deputise for 8903 on the first train of the day. Everything else ran to plan and to time. Another highlight was the return of No. 8903 as No. 3 'Jonathan'. The loco will wear this livery again for our next gala, which should be in October - a vintage gala. Other locos expected to feature include Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 10. Theanks to Murray for coming and participating in another successful event. The timetable originally featured lots of shuttles. These were abandoned after the second of the day. The first arrives at Box End behind Blackbird.... ...and prepares to leave with Russell The sedond pounds back to Rutton behind new WLR loco No. 14 The 1970's train that failed to run at the MVR's centenary gala last year was run this year, with Cleeve Abbey (WLR No. 9) and Blackbird in charge. The train nears Box end.... ... and is seen between Rose Halt and Box End An arty shot with WLR wagon No. 10 in the foreground and WLR 14 and 9 in the background WLR No. 8903, which remains at the MVR for a few weeks on loan, is seen having just left Rose Halt... ...and again near Box End As the timetable went up the wall we decided to run a cavalcade. The locos were in the wrong order at Rutton so were sent in turn to Rose Halt and are seen there after assembly The locos then ran round the line, and are seen at Box End. The engine is in as new condition short of burnt paint on the smokebox door - this is a common problem and can occur after nextto no use if the gas is left on a too high setting. These shots show the engine on trial today, with a variety of stock. The event was run to a timetable, which was kept to in the morning and vaguely so in the afternoon. Although 'Rhys' was not run in yet - and thus not hauling trans itself - it doubleheaded the 'Talking train' and service trains throughout the day. Finally, the BigWLR was in use - using No. 2 'Simplicity', giving rides and letting our guest for the day have a drive! A busy scene at Woodrow. Russell is about to depart on the 1146. Blackbird is awaiting for Russell to leave so it can continue shunting. Coity Castle is on the same line as Blackbird, awaiting to move into the platform to clear the loop. In the siding are Nos. 8903 and 6 (in between turns), failed No. 5 and No. 10 - on display. A favourite train of mine was the double heading of diesels - believed to be the first time since 2004 and the trials of No. 8. No. 8 'Coity Castle' pilots 'Blackbird' out of Woodrow tunnel.... ... and up Amersham bank The talking train was a new experience for the WLR - and ran twice, with No 8903 and Russell hauling them. The afternoon train is seen here with Russell at the helm, heading back to Woodrow. This is rare - usually the 'TTT' runs on the other ('wrong') line - but this afternoon working commenced at Amersham rather than Woodrow, and this run was effectively a positioning turn The finale was rather different to usual - new diesel 'Blackbird' on 12 wagons. It performed well along this section... ...rolling sweetly into Woodrow... ..but by the tunnel it was struggling... ... so assistance was called for. No. 8903 was hastily relit having just finished its days work - and left Amersham to pilot the flailing diesel up the bank. For some reason sporting teh Centenarian headboard, No. 8903 pilots Blackbird up Amersham bank. This train has told us to limit the MVR based diesel to 9 wagons in the future. All trials were undertaken at the WLR wlight engine, and the trials undertaken at the MVR with ECS. Its first revenue earning tip was at this gala.

No. 8 'Coity Castle' was, at this point, leading... ... and shortly after arrives at Box End Awiaiting the grand finale - No. 8903 'brewing up' The grand finale aproaches Rose Halt, hauled by 8903 from the WLR and Russel The crowds(!) look on as the grand finale trundles through Rose Halt. And it looks like 8903 is doing all of the work. Not the first time then, eh Murray! The grand finale train between Rose Halt and Box End The 4 steamers on shed at Rutton, with the stockin the distance at Box End At the end of the day the 6 locomotives rest in Rutton depot - for night photography???
